A cold front passed through our area Friday afternoon and evening. Behind it, much cooler air settled into the region by daybreak Saturday. High pressure in northern Virginia kept skies clear and winds fairly light, allowing temperatures to drop into the 30s for most spots. Lows dropped into the lower 30s across northwestern Virginia, where freeze warnings were in place.
These temperatures represent the coldest weather in almost six months. Prior to Saturday morning, Richmond’s coldest low of the season thus far was 44° on Thursday & Friday mornings. Prior to that, the coldest temperature was 36° on April 24 & 25.
Richmond’s low of 39° was a full 10° below normal, but still warmer than the record of 32° from 1988. Highs Saturday afternoon will reach the mid 60s, about 7° below normal. The coolest high temperature ever for October 13 was 54° in 1977.
Southwesterly winds will allow Sunday morning lows to stay in the 40s, followed by afternoon highs in the mid and upper 70s.
