SALEM, Va. (WTVR) – An autopsy confirms a 47-year-old Virginia man died of acute fungal meningitis.

The state Medical Examiner announced Friday that Douglas Wingate of Salem contracted the illness through a spinal injection.

The Virginia Health Department has not identified Wingate as one of the people who received a tainted shot in this recent outbreak, but they do acknowledge there has been one death in the state.

Overall, 14 people have died in the outbreak, 170 have fallen ill.
