CHESTERFIELD, Va. (WTVR)—There’s other work happening in development across the county
The old Cloverleaf Mall bustles with construction and progress. A brand new 123,000-plus-square-foot Kroger Marketplace is just about done in what’s now being called Stonebridge; doors will open in less than two months.
County leaders say the $54 million dollar development brings a promise of revitalizing one of the region’s popular gateways to Chesterfield County.
For many, seeing developments like Stonebridge get off the ground brings another promise—jobs.
Timothy Schumpert is excited for the Kroger to open along Midlothian Turnpike.
“I think they’ll be developing new jobs,” he said. “Somebody came by and told me about it and I’m looking to advance, so I came out here to put in an application,” Schumpert said.
There’s other work happening in development across the county. Schumpert said he’s noticed the rebuilding of a restaurant just across the street from the Stonebridge site.
There’s also the new Uptown Alley entertainment complex near Hull Street and Route 288. That site is a $17 million dollar, 56,000-square-potential-square foot venue with 36 bowling lanes, and two full service restaurants and a conference center.
County Supervisors recently discussed a grant agreement between the Economic Development Authority and Uphoff Ventures on that construction project.
In order to assist and promote the development of the facility in the county, leaders will likely provide that incentive in exchange for the company creating at least 80 jobs and investing at least $17 million dollars in capital expenditures on the property.
Uptown Alley is also expected to open in December. While many are anxious for doors to open on these new development projects, others wonder why they haven’t seen more retailers fill empty spaces at area shopping venues like Westchester Commons.
They’re hopeful the plans to build homes there will soon pan out, so traffic picks up even more.
