RICHMOND, VA (WTVR) -- A new website has launched to help students track what graduates earn from various degrees.

The Virginia's Longitudinal Data Systemallows people to track what recent graduates in the Commonwealth are earning, making it easy for students to see what is realistic when it comes to future pay.

"Twenty-eight thousand, that is a little surprising," Rob Johnson, a VCU student, said.

"There is a lot less people with full time wages than I would have expected," Sage Hawn, a physiology major at VCU, said.

The project is a website seven years in the making. The General Assembly has contributed over $13 million dollars to the project over the years.

"I like it; it's a lot of graphs and charts,” Max Workman, a criminal justice major at VCU, said. “It's very visual.”

Most students that CBS 6 contacted were disappointed with the amount of money recent graduates are earning, a fact that doesn't surprise the Director of VCU's Career Services.

"I think it's important for them to consider their major but I think it's equally important what they do to supplement their major with part-time jobs and internships," Joe Testani, Director of VCU Career Services, said.

Next year the website will feature how much student debt recent graduates have, a major burden for people in their twenties, experts say.
