WASHINGTON (WTVR) –  A new study shows free birth control can lower the number of unplanned pregnancies and abortions.

Researchers at the Washington University School of Medicine gave 9,000 women free birth control for four years.

In that time,  abortion rates for the group were 78-percent lower than the national average.

Researchers said about half of all pregnancies in the United States are unplanned.
