PETERSBURG, Va. (WTVR) - Construction crews have made an unusual discovery in Petersburg Thursday.

While renovating the home of Petersburg's first mayor, crews found drawings dating back to the 1800s.

The pictures were found when crews pulled off a section of the porch's roof. Experts believe they are self portraits of the person who build the home, created in either 1836 or 1856.

In addition, crews also found a set of handprints on the wood.

Eventually, all of the images will be covered back up as work on the house continues.

However, members of the Battersea Foundation said they hope to find some way to display those images once work on the house is complete.
