(WTVR) - Students working towards their GED have just over a year to complete their work or start over and face a tougher test.

Starting January first of 2014, GED hopefuls will be required to take a computer based test that resembles  the curriculum that traditional high school students take.

The new computer based test will reflect the statewide Standard of Learning.

Educators say that as standards have become tougher for traditional high school students, standards are also increasing for GED students to keep the two in line with each other.

The cost of obtaining a GED is also going to double from $60 to $120.

Students currently working on a GED must complete it before December 13th of next year or they will have to start the process over.
