RICHMOND (WTVR) – Governor Bob McDonnell and First Lady Maureen McDonnell are hosted the Commonwealth’s first wine summit today.

Wine experts from around the country were in Richmond to discuss Virginia’s  blossoming industry.

The summit featured panels, tastings and a keynote speech from wine expert Steven Spurrier.

Virginia is now home to over 200 wineries and October is known as “Virginia Wine Month.” Sales of Virginia wine reached a record high in fiscal year 2011 with more than 5.5 million bottles sold.

Earlier this year Wine Enthusiast recognized Virginia as one of the 10 Best Wine Travel Destinations of 2012. More recently, Fodor’s listed Virginia as a top wine travel destination.
