DOSWELL, Va. (WTVR) - Let the fun, funnel cakes and a little bit of drizzle commence. It is an opportunity to make memories. The State Fair of Virginia is underway at Meadow Event Park in Caroline County.
Fairgoers started lining up well before the gates opened at 2pm.
Judy Showers and her husband Bob are visiting Virginia from Pennsylvania. They didn't want to miss an opportunity to see the historic State Fair of Virginia.
Judy says, "We are very excited. We haven been to a State fair since our days in Texas in the mid-80s."
After nearly shutting down following a bankruptcy earlier this year many longtime vendors were worried.
Rick Simms and his wife, Donna, traveled from West Virginia to run their Coaches Coffee Cup truck. Rick says he is relieved the fair was salvaged.
Simms says, "We were hanging in there to make sure the fair was coming back. We want to be a part of it."
The State Fair of Virginia is 10 days of sounds, sights and sugary delights from the cotton candy to deep fried candy bars.
Mark Lovell with Universal Fairs LLC bought the State Fair of Virginia at auction earlier this year. He says the fair is on solid financial footing. Lovell says he wants to grow the fair to attract 500,000 visitors annually which would make the State Fair of Virginia one of the largest fairs in the nation.
Lovell says, "I think a lot of people had misconceptions that you cannot run a successful business and hold onto traditions. That is completely false."
The State Fair of Virginia runs through Oct. 8 at Meadow Event Park.
