Richmond, VA (WTVR) – You may have seen Richmonders dancing in the streets on Thursday.

It’s because the City of Richmond asked everyone who lived or worked in the City to take a break. But not the sit down and relax break.

City leaders are asking everyone to take a few minutes out of their busy schedules and exercise. The idea is to try and raise awareness about the growing problem of childhood obesity.

“This is the first time in as long as we can remember that children will have a shorter life expectancy than their parents,” says Denise Butler, who is the Wellness Coordinator for the City of Richmond.

So we’re talking about how just a few minutes of exercise a day can make a big difference.”

Thursday’s event downtown was one of thousands held around the world as a part of the Jam World Initiative.

The goal was to set a new world record by getting two million people around the globe to stop what they were doing today and work out.
