PRINCE GEORGE COUNTY, Va. (WTVR) - Virginia State Police are investigating a morning car accident that killed a 17-year-old high school student. State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller identified the victim as Marvin Massenburg Jr., of  Prince George.

She said it appeared Massenburg was driving to school this morning along Courthouse Road, near Bull Hill, when a Prince George Police Officer, responding to an alarm call, drove up from behind.

When Massenburg moved over to allow the police cruiser to pass, his Honda Accord ran off the road and into the swamp. The car overturned in the water.

The police officer saw what happened, turned around and attempted to rescue the driver, Geller said. A second police officer also jumped in making several attempts to free the driver from the car.

Massenburg, Jr was pronounced dead at the scene.

Prince George County Schools Superintendent Bobby Browder said Massenburg was a solid academic student, well known and respected among his peers and involved in the community.

The alarm to which the police officer was responding turned out to be a false alarm.

Grief counselors will be at Prince George County High School on Thursday morning, to help students dealing with the loss of a high school senior Tuesday morning.
