Doctors often tell you that exercise is the key to losing weight. But getting up and standing may be just as important.

Scientists say a lipo-protein that converts bad cholesterol into good cholesterol diminishes by 95% when you sit too long.

So they say standing for a short time, even in your cubicle at work, can reduce your risk of heart disease by 30%. Doctors also say standing can decrease your chances of developing some cancers, diabetes and obesity.

“When we are standing our muscles are firing. And when we do that our insulin works 40% better. You might live a couple years of a shorter life span if you sit too much versus people who sit too little,” says Dr. Anup Kanodia with OSU’s Wexner Medical Center.

Research shows that the average person spends 55% of their day sitting down.

Doctors say even if you work at a desk all day there are a few things you can do to lower that number. They include standing up and answering your phone every time it rings. Doctors also suggest taking a five minute walk every hour you’re in the office.
