FINAL SCORE FRIDAY: Hermitage at Varina

VARINA, Va. (WTVR) - In a classic matchup of 1 vs. 2, the Hermitage Panthers made one more play than the Varina Blue Devils and won their fifth straight in this series 20-17 in overtime.

Varina committed 4 turnovers in the game, 3 in the first half alone. After a Brandon Wood fumble, Hermitage capitalized with a 1 yard run from quarterback Nico Johnson, and the Panthers took a 7-3 lead into halftime.

In the second half, Herb Anderson scored on a 3 yard run for Varina to give the Blue Devils a 10-7 lead. Anderson finished with 86 yards on the ground.

Hermitage answered with an 8 yard TD run from Derrick Green to move back in front 14-10. Green carried 35 times for 123 yards and a lone score.

Anderson would score his second TD of the night on a Fumblerooskie play for Varina to give the Blue Devils a 17-14 lead, but Hermitage got the ball back and drove down the field setting up John Steibel for a 26 yard FG with less than a minute to play to tie the game at 17 and send it to overtime.

On Varina's possession in OT, the Hermitage defense stuffed Anderson on 4th and goal from the 1. Steibel connected on a 32 yard field goal on the Panther posession to give Hermitage the win.

Niko Johnson completed 10 of 16 passes for 161 yards and had a touchdown run. Varina outgained Hermitage overall 301-286. The Panthers improve to 3-0 overall while Varina falls to 2-1.
