Historically black colleges to receive millions in grants

WASHINGTON (WTVR) – The U.S. Department of Education announced Tuesday that historically black colleges across the country are getting $227.9 million in grants. Schools in Virginia will receive nearly $13 million. 

Officials said the grants will aid in academic resources, financial management systems, endowment-building capacity, as well as upgrades to the colleges’ buildings.

Additionally, the five-year grants from the Office of Postsecondary Education will pay for curriculum reform, counseling and student service programs, as well as staff development and new construction. 

The Strengthening Historically Black Colleges and Universities funds will also be used for establish teacher education programs and for lab equipment for science or other areas of study where officials said African Americans are underrepresented.

“The grants will help these important institutions continue to provide their students with the quality education they need to compete in the global economy,” said U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan.

  • Norfolk State University $3,312,058
  • St. Paul’s College $1,392,751
  • Virginia State University $3,679,066
  • Virginia Union University $1,719,627
  • Virginia University of Lynchburg $500,000
