RICHMOND, Va (WTVR) –  Expect delays on the Huguenot Bridge this weekend. Crews will shut it down from 9 p.m. on Sunday through 5 a.m. on Monday. Workers will be repairing a bearing seat under the Huguenot Bridge (Route 147) as part of the ongoing bridge reconstruction project. As a safety precaution, traffic will use a detour during the repair.

VDOT recommends Huguenot Road drivers use the following detour routes:

  • Northbound – Chippenham Parkway (Route 150) north over the Willey Bridge to River Road east to Huguenot Road or use Powhite Parkway/Route 76 (toll) east into Richmond
  • Southbound – River Road west to Chippenham Parkway (Route 150) south to Huguenot Road

VDOT says “Although this bearing seat does not have an immediate impact on the overall integrity or safety of the bridge, we want the contractor to address this issue now to prevent the need for costly maintenance years later,” said Mike Saunders, project manager. The construction contractor will accept all costs associated with this repair.
While crews repair the bearing seat, a jack will slightly lift a section of structural steel under the bridge. In order to prevent unnecessary weight or movement on top of the bridge during the repair, traffic will be restricted.

Currently the contractor is demolishing the old bridge and installing beams to support the riding surface for the second half of the new structure. This section is expected to be completed and open to drivers in summer 2013.
