(CNN) – It’s one of the most popular dietary supplements in the country: fish oil. But evidence out today shows it may not be helping our hearts at all.

Doctors have long touted the Omega-3 fatty acids found in fish like sardines and salmon as a way to prevent heart attacks and heart disease. That prompted millions of Americans to invest in a daily routine of fish oil supplements.

But the study, dating back to 1989 and involving nearly 70-thousand people, found they did not appear to improve heart health. The study by Greek researchers is published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
