RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) -Central Virginia is remembering 9/11 in several ways on this, the 11th anniversary of the attacks.

At a morning gathering outside Richmond City Hall, there is an event with speakers, poetry readings and the ringing of bells. Richmond Mayor Dwight Jones encouraged Richmonders to sign up and volunteer to help Virginia veterans and the community at large. [Click here for more information about volunteer opportunities]

Traffic along Marshall Street between 9th and 10th Streets will be closed until 10:00 a.m. for Tuesday's 9/11 event.

In addition, Virginia's 35 state parks will offer you a chance to give back to the community.

“Our 35 Virginia State Parks have always been places where people find therapy for the mind, body and spirit in nature and escape the turmoil of the modern world,” said DCR State Parks Director Joe Elton in a statement. “It is fitting and proper for us to gather in the quiet tranquility of state parks to honor the memories of the lost and celebrate the efforts of those who sacrificed during those dark days and weeks. In our state parks on Sept. 11, we will build up, restore, create and remember that the goodness of the human spirit is stronger than the darkest motives of terrorists.”

Volunteer opportunities in the state parks include cleanups and collecting food and toiletries for veterans in need. Click the calendar page for more information.

Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell issued a proclamation that recognized September 11, 2012 as a Day of Remembrance, Patriotism and Prayer in the Commonwealth of Virginia. He also invited Virginians to take part in a one-minute Moment of Silence at 9:39 a.m., the time when American Airlines Flight 77 hit the Pentagon in Arlington.
