(CNN ) – A Canadian dance studio caused a stir with its latest class — pole dancing for kids. The instructor,  Kristy Craig said her classes are about fitness and fun, not sex.

She also said children who pole dance get an excellent cardiovascular and upper-body workout. Her Little Spinners class has four students signed up so far, and their parents already take the adult class.

“Some of my more advanced students have poles at home to practice and stretch,” Craig said. “It would be great if there were classes where they could learn how to properly do something.”

“There is nothing provocative. There is nothing sexual about it,” she said. “It’s pure fitness and strength and fun. I mean kids love climbing trees. They will climb anything”

Kids pole dancing isn’t a new sport. A National Pole Dancing Championship was held in Russia last week – kids as young as seven years old were allowed to compete.
