RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) – A Hurricane Hunter Aircraft investigated Hurricane Leslie this Friday morning, concluding that Leslie is nearly stationary about 415 miles south-southeast of Bermuda. Maximum sustained winds are down slightly to Tropical Storm force strength at 70 mph, putting Leslie just shy of a Category One hurricane. She should pick up northward motion again this weekend, and re-intensify to a hurricane.
Even though the storm is far away from any U.S. land-falling threat, it is still producing rough surf and waves that are reaching the U.S. East Coast. This is creating a high risk for rip currents along most of the Atlantic beaches, including those in Virginia.

If your weekend plans take you along the Atlantic coastline, please avoid swimming in the Ocean beyond “wading” level. Make sure your feet can always touch the ground and that you remain a few easy steps from shore. Even the most experienced swimmers could be caught in a rip current and swept rapidly away from the beach into the Ocean.
