RICHMOND, Va (WTVR)- For some locals, news of Richmond gracing the cover of the October 2012 issue of Outside magazine was music to their ears.

“I just love the vibe of the city in general,” said VCU student, Crystal Chu.

And those who voted for Richmond in the “Best Town Ever” contest on Facebook --  love the city, too.

The article showcases the James River and all the activity that revolves around the river, including biking, kayaking, fishing, and how the once polluted waters are now clear enough to see fish, not to mention luring music lovers for the Downtown Riverrock Festival..

“To have [the James River] in the proximity of downtown, it`s absolutely amazing,” said Richmonder, Shawn Creasey.

The magazine says the winning towns were chosen based on job prospects, cultural vibrancy, job prospects, environmental stewardship and access to the outdoors.

“It’s  taken the city 20 plus years to get there,” said Richmonder Shawn Alexander.

Richmonder’s CBS 6 spoke with say they weren’t surprised Richmond won the contest.

“I think it's pretty accurate in my opinion…I just think honestly, I think this is the best place in the world,” said Chu.

Richmond Mayor Dwight Jones is in Charlotte, but released this statement:

Obtaining Outside Magazine’s ‘Best Town Ever’ award provides RVA another opportunity to showcase all that Richmond has to offer. As residents, we already know that Richmond is an outstanding tourist destination and a great place to live, so I would like to thank all of those who voted, included great photos, and witty comments, as together, we all helped capture the essence of RVA. Richmond’s showcase in the October issue of Outside Magazine will aid in detailing how our vast array of outdoor activities and festive atmosphere accent our city’s crown jewel, the James River. From white-water rafting, fishing, off road and street bicycling, running marathons or trails, to our scenic tree lined streets; residents and visitors alike have a wide range of outdoor activities to fill any appetite or activity level.
