RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) – The Fresh Market in Richmond’s Carytown neighborhood is scheduled to open Sept. 19, according to a press release from the grocery store chain.

“We are excited to open another store in Richmond and to continue expanding our reach in Virginia,” said Craig Carlock, the company’s president and chief executive officer, in the press release. The Carytown store, located at 10 N. Nansemond Street, will be the company’s eight store in Virginia.

When plans for the Carytown location were previously announced, they were met with some public controversy. Some neighbors felt the chain would squeeze out local retailers, like the nearby Ellwood Thompson’s Natural Food Market.

In a July interview, Carytown Merchants Association President Bob Broomfield expressed a different concerns. “They took down that buffer between retail and people’s homes,” he said. “So, right across the street these people are going to have to live with the garbage truck perhaps coming and going.”

Last month the Fresh Market held a job fair where managers interviewed potential employees to fill 90 new jobs.

When the Fresh Market opens later this month, the company plans to hand out a reusable shopping bag and sample gourmet coffee to the first 1,000 customers.
