ETTRICK, Va. (WTVR) - With record enrollment for the fall semester and a high number of freshman coming in at Virginia State University, some found themselves on the verge of not making the cut.

About 160 students were short several hundred to several thousand dollars, including some seniors. If they couldn't come up with the money, they would have to leave the Ettrick campus.

Seeing the situation, VSU Administrators sent out a plea, asking alumni, faculty, staff and friends of the University for donations.

The result, a record fundraising effort kept the students in the classroom.

More than $240-Thousand dollars came in and was immediately dispersed for the students to pay off their tuition and in some cases the cost of their books.

VSU says with 63-hundred students enrolled on campus, the need for financial assistance was greater than ever.

The donations also mean, several seniors will now be able to graduate, on time.
