DENALI PARK, Alaska (WTVR) – A backpacker was attacked to death by a grizzly bear while hiking at the Denali National Park, the park said in a statement on Saturday.
Park authorities report that three hikers found a backpack, torn clothing and traces of blood near the Toklat River on Friday afternoon.
Park rangers spent Friday night searching for the location of the victim’s remains, but they decided to resume the search the next day due to the amount of daylight and the presence of grizzly bears in the area.
Officials attempted to locate the predator and blocked off the area to find the hiker’s body Saturday morning. Park authorities estimated about 12 grizzly bears have been around the area all summer.
This was the first known fatal bear mauling at Denali National Park.
