CHESTERFIELD, Va. (WTVR) - Chesterfield police are investigating an officer-involved shooting that sent a 51-year-old man to the hospital.

According to police, a man was shot after threatening officers with a handgun in the 13800 block of Hull Street Road.

Chesterfield police said this all started shortly before midnight on Wednesday when they were called to a domestic assault in the 4900 block of Kimmeridge Drive.

That's where officers found a woman who said that her husband, Russell D. Hornkohl, had been beaten her in the head with a baseball bat. She said after he assaulted her, he took off.

Officers located the suspect's vehicle and initiated a traffic stop in the 13800 block of Hull Street Road. During the stop, police said Hornkohl got out of the vehicle and was holding a handgun at his side.

Police said Hornkohl ignored commands to drop the weapon. When he lifted the weapon and pointed it toward the officer, authorities said the officer opened fire and Hornkohl was shot once in the arm.

Hornkohl, who was taken to VCU Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries, is being held at the Riverside Regional Jail without bond pending. A hearing is slated for 11 a.m. on Friday in Chesterfield County General District Court.

Hornkohl's wife was transported to Chippenham Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
