Do you eat all the food you buy at the grocery store? A new study by the National Resources Defense Council says despite rising costs at the supermarket, many Americans are throwing perfectly good food in the garbage.

In fact, Americans toss out 40% of the food they get into the trash. That breaks down to about $2200 worth of food a year wasted by the average household.

Researchers say it’s not just people forgetting about the food they buy — or buying too much that’s leading to the problem. They say portion sizes are also getting larger, so people are making more food and not eating as much of it.
