(CNN) — An Aeroflot flight from New York to Moscow was diverted to Iceland early Thursday after U.S. law enforcement officials received an anonymous bomb threat, saying there were explosives on board, an airline representative said.

Authorities informed the airline that the person making the bomb threat said there were “five suitcases on board of the plane containing explosives,” said Irina Dannenberg, an Aeroflot spokeswoman.

The plane landed at Keflavik International Airport and passengers were evacuated, she said.

There were 253 people on the plane including the crew. The incident is being investigated, according to Dannenberg.

CNN’s Bharati Naik and Alla Eshchenko contributed to this report.
