PETERSBURG, Va. (WTVR) – Folks in Petersburg are cleaning up after a quick-moving storm rolled through the area Wednesday afternoon.

Petersburg Fire and EMS' Mark Milazzo said the storm toppled trees and knocked out power to over 3,000 customers in several parts of the city. As of Thursday around 11 a.m., Milazzo told CBS 6 News' Wayne Covil that there were only a handful of customers without power.

Milazzo also said the storm ripped off one large tree limb, which knocked down a power line, and caught an apartment building's roof on fire. The building was evacuated, after the roof's support trusses were damaged. A few homes were also damaged by falling tree limbs.

City inspectors spent the morning surveying the damage and talking with residents. City crews were busy at multiple locations, using chain saws and front end loaders to open up roads that were closed.

The city is asking residents to place storm debris on the curbside -- and not in the street. Call 804-733-2415 for Public Works to schedule a pick up.
