RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) – As expected, the disturbance we’ve been monitoring in the central Atlantic became Tropical Depression Eight late Wednesday afternoon (EDT). TD Eight poses no threat to land as it moves north at 18 mph with maximum sustained winds of 35 mph. Eight will curve northeast into the north Atlantic to end the week. This disturbance became better-defined early Wednesday, but still remains below Tropical Storm strength (39 mph).  Even if it can become Tropical Storm Gordon (the next name on our list), it will never post a threat to land as it tracks through the open waters of the Central Atlantic Ocean the rest of this week.

The other disturbance in the Atlantic Basin is affecting the western Caribbean and Central America, bringing heavy rains there.
