RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) – A cold front draped across the mountains of western Virginia Wednesday morning will receive a kicking nudge eastward early this afternoon from an approaching upper disturbance that has been producing showers and storms overnight in Kentucky and Tennessee. This will prompt the cold front to move southeast through central Virginia this Wednesday afternoon, creating scattered heavy showers and thunderstorms, some of which may be severe. The severe storms will be capable of damaging wind gusts in excess of 60 mph, as well as large hail (quarter-size or bigger). However, any of these afternoon and early evening scattered storms will likely produce very heavy rainfall, frequent lightning, gusty winds up to 50 mph, and small hail. The front will make it to the Bay by midnight, pushing the storm activity out of the state this evening. Much of the East Coast will experience these scattered strong to severe storms this afternoon and evening while that front moves to the Atlantic.
