CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WTVR) – One person was killed in a Monday morning accident on Route 288 north near the Robious Road ramp near the Chesterfield-Powhatan County line, Virginia State Police Sgt. Thomas Molnar confirmed to CBS 6.

Molnar said that, according to several witnesses, the crash occurred when the driver of a Jeep, who was traveling southbound, crossed the grassy median and struck a tractor-trailer head-on that was traveling northbound.

The impact caused the tractor-trailer to run off the right side of the roadway down the embankment and catch fire.  The tractor-trailer was hauling lumber at the time of the crash.

The adult male driver of the Jeep died at the scene.

The driver of the tractor-trailer suffered serious non-life threatening injuries and was transported by ambulance to the hospital.

The deceased driver of the Jeep was James T. Fowler Jr., 46, of the 5000 block of White Oak Circle in Sandston.

The driver of the tractor-trailer is Donald E. Coleman, 39, of the 20000 block of Hilltop Drive in McKenney.

The crash remains under investigation.

All lanes of Route 288 north were closed for several hours, but re-opened at 3:00 p.m., according to VDOT.
