CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va.--Not much remains of the dream that was once SportsQuest, except a multimillion-dollar debt.

On Wednesday SportsQuest LLC filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy. Once upon a time, until May, SportsQuest  was considered a main driver behind athletic development in Chesterfield.

According to the bankruptcy filed in federal court in Richmond on Wednesday the former owner of the site hold assets of only $1000 dollars, but owe more than seven point three million dollars to creditors.

With the goal posts standing and fields already painted many in Chesterfield say its waste the complex is going unused.

Chuck McAulay, who was cheering on his grandson at soccer practice, said that despite the spoiled vision of Sportsquest he hopes the massive facility will reach its potential down the road.  “I’d really like to see someone market this place,”  McAulay said. “Take the bull by the horns and fill it.”

Mike Golden with Chesterfield Parks and Rec said the $4.3 million dollars invested by the county,  to help build the fields off of Genito Road, will not be wasted.

Chesterfield struck a 20-year lease for public use with the new owner,Turf Manufacturer, Shaw Industries, which acquired the complex from Sportsquest through foreclosure last spring.

Golden assured taxpayers their investment won’t lead to turf war.

“That was a our intent and purpose was to meet the needs of the county,” said Golden.

“My hope is to see these fields filled,”  McAulay said. “I really want to see a vibrant area and grow the economy.”

CBS6 reached out to Sportsquests’ attorneys to comment on the bankruptcy,  but we haven’t heard back.
