A new CBS News/Quinnipiac University/New York Times poll found that Obama holds a lead over Romney in Ohio, as well as in other swing states Pennsylvania and Florida.

In Ohio, and Florida, the president leads by six points among voters and in Pennsylvania, he has an eleven point lead.

Quinnipiac pays particular attention to those three states because as Peter Brown says, “no one has been elected president of the United States since 1960 without carrying at least two of those three.”

Brown is the assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. “The president is in pretty good shape as of today,” Brown said, adding that if the election were held today the President would carry all three.

But he pointed out, there are almost 100 days until the election so “while the president’s ahead, we still have a long way to go.”

“Mr. Romney’s doing better on questions about his ability to handle the economy than anything else,” said Brown. :That’s his strong suit and voters see him that way but he fares better on those economic questions than on the non-economic stuff.”

“The president is viewed as better on health care, he’s viewed as better on foreign policy but on the economy it’s pretty much a split thing at this point,” said Brown.

Brown said that the economy is what matters to the nation. “More than 50% of voters say it’s the single most important issue to their vote.”
