RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) – Several reports of waterspouts over the Chesapeake Bay this morning are coming in from storm spotters, forming from the heavy thunderstorms mostly remaining over water. Waterspouts are usually short-lived and remain over, obviously, the water. But they are a serious threat to boats, with winds strong enough to overturn a boat and create locally hazardous waves. Boaters seeing a waterspout should immediately move to safe harbor, as that indicates the environment over the Bay is favorable for more waterspouts, especially as these isolated heavy showers and thunderstorms continue to impact the Bay and the far eastern Peninsulas of Virginia.

Here is one photo taken by Philip Davenport near Smith Point, who has reported seeing two waterspouts this Monday morning.
