The accident happened at 1 p.m., at Route 627/Courthouse Road, just over a mile north of Route 613.

Police said that a 2004 GMC 2500 pickup truck was traveling north on Route 627 when it first ran off the right side of the road two times before striking the guard rail.

The impact with the guardrail sent the truck back across the roadway where it struck another guard rail, said police. The truck then went through the guard rail, down a 20-foot embankment and overturned onto its roof in a Hatcher’s Run creek.

It came slid, upside down into about eight feet of water said police. A dog riding with Davis was unharmed and was returned to a family member.

The driver, Herbert J. Davis, 74, of Dewitt, Va., died at the scene. Police said that Davis did not have on his seat belt.

His body has been taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Richmond for examination and autopsy.

Virginia State Police said they are still investigating the cause of a fatal crash.
