RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) – An upper-level trough providing lift and its associated slow-moving surface cold front will move toward Virginia Friday, bringing the chance for rain and scattered strong thunderstorms this afternoon and through the evening. The Slight Risk area initially covering most of Virginia was dropped after Noon Friday, as a result of morning rain and thick cloud-cover limiting daytime heating and instability. The greater severe threats lie to our neighboring states to the south and southwest of Virginia, where damaging wind gusts and large hail are likely.

In Virginia through this weekend, any storms that do develop in this hot, humid air-mass will be capable of torrential downpours, strong wind gusts, small hail and frequent lightning. If you have outdoor plans, especially in the afternoons and early evenings, it is wise to make your indoor safety plans ahead of time.

A Flash Flood Watch has already been issued for Noon through 11 p.m. for parts of northern and west-central Virginia, closer to the approaching cold front from the north.
