RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) – The City of Richmond is offering free meals this summer for kids through their “Summer Meals for Kids” program, a partnership between The City’s Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Children between the ages of one and 18 can enjoy a free meal by showing up at any one of the more than 125 food locations around the City listed here. You are not required to register your child in advance for this food. Many of these locations offer both breakfast and lunch from a food service company contracted by the department to prepare and deliver the meals to all the food stations. Locations serving as a food station are not required to pay any fees, either, so it is free for them to open their doors.
The Office of the Press Secretary to the Mayor says, “The purpose of the program is to make sure children have access to proper nutrition during the summer months when they are not receiving meals at school.”
Summer 2011’s program served an estimated 346,000 free meals to kids in the metro Richmond area. The 2012 summer program continues through August 31.
