KING GEORGE COUNTY, Va. (WTVR) – King George will honor the fallen soldiers whose remains were dumped in the county’s landfill by placing a bronze plaque at the site.

At 4 p.m., on Sunday, Sept. 23, officials and residents will unveil the memorial. It reads: “For honor, respect and in memory of those American service members, known but to God, who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. We are ever grateful. The citizens of King George County and a grateful nation.”

The King George Board of Supervisors unanimously approved the landfill memorial in July, as a way to, “honor the fallen.” More than 50 people in the community donated money for the marker, which cost about $1,200.

The military confirmed last year that the partial remains of service members who died fighting overseas were incinerated and put in the landfill between 2004 and 2008 after coming through Dover Air Force Base.

New rules prohibit the air force from disposing of remains like that anymore.

CBS 6 is at the event and will have a full report starting at 11 p.m.
