LAKE CHESDIN, Va. (WTVR) - The recent spell of hot weather and lack of rain has caused water levels at Lake Chesdin to drop three feet below the dam.
Folks who rely on the lake for recreation and drinking water are keeping a watchful eye on the levels.
Jon McKee, of Chesdin Boat Sales, told CBS 6 senior reporter Wayne Covil Wednesday that the lake levels have forced him to pull seven boats out of the water over the last week and a half.
"These people come out about every two to three days and just keep moving them out," said McKee.
And as water levels drop, so does business for folks who work on the lake.
Ian Gardner at Cozy Cove Marina said fishing sales have been definitely hurt by the low levels.
"If we don't get rain tonight, tomorrow [or] by the weekend they won't be able to put boats in here," said Whippernock Marina's Barbara Williams.
The dry conditions this summer are starting to remind Williams of the drought of 2010.
"I don't understand why they keep letting so much water out of the lake and waiting to implement the mandatory restrictions," said Williams. "They wait till the Lake gets so low, before they implement mandatory restrictions."
In fact, the Appomattox Regional Water Authority plans to discuss the lake's water levels at a Thursday meeting.
However, mandatory water restrictions do not have to be implemented until levels on the lake reach 80 inches below the dam.
