RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) – There is a monument in the works to honor Virginia women. Plans call for the monument to be installed at the Virginia State Capitol. Now the Virginia Women’s Monument Commission is looking for input into the monument’s design.

Design proposals must be submitted by October. 1, 2012.  The selection will be announced in March 2013 — Women’s History Month.

During meetings held last fall, it was decided that in addition to inspiring women while recognizing the struggles and accomplishments of women in the past, the monument should encourage visitors to connect with “other historic sites at which women played significant roles.” [CLICK HERE: See photos taken during the Virginia Women’s Monument Commission’s Community Conversations — October of 2011]

“The commission members have had the opportunity to hear feedback from citizens from all across the Commonwealth on the themes and messages that a Monument to Virginia women should convey,” said Secretary of Administration Lisa Hicks-Thomas in an email to CBS 6. “Now we are excited to see the vision that the artists will create based on that feedback. I anticipate that we will get a number of submissions from artists from all over the country and that the final product will be one that will inspire similar efforts in other states.”
