Portsmouth infant found dead in minivan

Portsmouth police are investigating an infant death that happened on Friday. They say a child was found unresponsive in a vehicle, and then later pronounced dead. 

On Friday, July 13, 2012 at approximately 3:49 P.M., Portsmouth dispatchers received a 911 call related to a child not moving or breathing. The child was located at the Children’s Harbor Child Care, in the 600 block of London Street.

Portsmouth police and EMS teams responded. Officers found 5-month-old Jeremy Rivera unresponsive. Several citizens were attempting CPR, but were unsuccessful.

Medics pronounced the victim dead at the scene.

Detectives learned that the father of the victim left his home in Suffolk, at approximately 9:30 A.M. He arrived at his place of employment in Portsmouth around 10:00 A.M.

Police say at approximately 3:00 P.M. the father went to his parked vehicle, got in, and drove to Children’s Harbor, where he intended to pick up his child. After arriving at Children’s Harbor, he got out of his vehicle and approached the day care.

Police say moments later he discovered his child in the back seat of his minivan. The child was in a car seat unresponsive.

The victim was taken to the Medical Examiner’s Office pending an autopsy.

The cause of death has not been concluded at this time.

No charges have been filed at this time.
