New York (CBS) - People from the Midwest to the East Coast sweated through another blistering day.
Temperatures skyrocketed above 100 degrees in several cities, such as Philadelphia, Washington and St. Louis, which leaves many utility companies stressed out.
Con Edison spokesman Michael Clendenin says, "The heat always gives us a challenge. We expect scattered outages."
The National Weather Service issued excessive heat warnings and heat advisories for Arkansas, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, New Jersey, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, Washington D.C., and West Virginia.
This heat wave has health officials very concerned. The New York Health Department urged residents to avoid staying outside too long and asked them to check on their neighbors, especially the elderly.
In Chicago, officials say a 64-year-old woman apparently dropped dead from heat exhaustion inside her apartment. The heat is said to be the cause of at least 24 deaths.
In Charlotte, there was a giveaway for air conditioning units.
Antoinette Davis cannot bear the heat any longer. "It's been about 100 in my house, and yes, I've been--it's been so miserable."
Some took advantage of using city water fountains. However, Deborah Lederman believes that ice cream does the trick. "The ice cream helps, and of course being around my fantastic family because they are cool and hip."
Meteorologists expect temperatures to break sometime Sunday as a cold front moves in, but it will likely bring some severe weather along as well.
