RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) - As Americans celebrate the birth of our nation, some undoubtedly are pondering what our Founding Fathers would say about our country today.

CBS 6 asked George Washington and Thomas Jefferson that question Wednesday at St. John's Church in Richmond's Church Hill.

The historical interpreters were part of special re-enactment of Patrick Henry's "Give me liberty or give me death" speech.

Both men gave a little advice after their performance.

"With the freedom won for you by your forefathers in battle, if we can not make from this a great happy and prosperous nation,  than you will have only yourselves to blame," said Col. George Washington.

Thomas Jefferson said "...no matter what happens in our past, present, or future, people are always gonna hold these hopes for their own freedom, their abilities to pursue their own lives, and their happiness, as they see fit."

You can see the re-enactment every Sunday at St. John's Church.
