RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) - A relaxing Independence Day is what many Central Virginians were anticipating Wednesday night.

One Goochland woman tells CBS 6, the last few weeks have been tumultuous.

“It's nice to do something normal ,” says Rebecca Mills.

Normalcy is all Mills was looking for after, like many central Virginians, going without power for days.

“We had family who let us put some of our food in their place,” Mills tells CBS 6.

On this holiday, Mills along with her daughter say they’re much more appreciative of life’s comforts, like a hot meal, air conditioning and electricity.

"It was hot.  I just went around in as few clothes as possible and just sat on my bed and read books,” says Mills’ daughter.

“I’m thankful we can celebrate the fourth of July and go home to air conditioning tonight,” says Mills.

While many Virginians were left sweating in the dark for multiple days, folks were in awe and all smiles this Independence Day.

We ran into one woman who says, she’s using this holiday to simply enjoy time with her family after many sleepless nights.

“I woke up at three o'clock in the morning because I was drenched, but, it was dark and I couldn't see anything. I ended up going to the store to get some water and sitting in the car for a little while,” says one Richmond woman.
