New Kent County provides water, cooling shelters thru Friday

NEW KENT COUNTY, Va. (WTVR) - Due to updated information on estimated power restorations New Kent has declared a local state of emergency as of July 3rd, 2012. This declaration will allow the County to receive additional resources from the state.

Two cooling shelters are open on Tuesday in New Kent County.

A shelter will be open at the New Kent County High School. That address is 7365 Egypt Road. The hours will run from 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 3, 2012.

The hours of operation from Wednesday thru Friday will be 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.

Showers will be available, and water and snacks will be provided by the Red Cross. No pets will be allowed at the shelter.

A cooling station will be open at Fire Station #1 as well. That address is 4315 N. Courthouse Road, Providence Forge. The hours are from 6:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. from Wednesday through Friday. Water and snacks will be provided by the Red Cross.

Drinking water will be available at the stations.

The New Kent Department of Public Utilities will provide water to help people without power flush their toilets. That water will be distributed behind the Food Lion in Quinton, located at 7300 Market Place Dr., and behind the Food Lion in Providence Forge, located at 9100 Pocahontas Trail.

Potable Water will be available at fire hydrants located to the rear of the Food Lion Grocery Store in Providence Forge, Food Lion Grocery Store on Route 60 in Bottoms Bridge, and the New Kent Visitors and Commerce Center at 7324 Vineyards Parkway.

Residents will need to provide their own water containers.
