RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR) – The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is proposing a toll for motorists traveling in both directions along Interstate 95.

VDOT said the proposal calls for passenger vehicles to pay $4. Semi trucks would be charged $12, along the state’s busiest interstate.

Additionally, officials said a toll plaza would constructed along I-95 in Sussex County, north of Emporia.

VDOT said the tolls could raise anywhere from $35 to $40 million a year and would fund repaving, among other needed improvements to Virginia’s I-95 corridor.

The planned tolls would require federal approval.

Officials said traffic on I-95 accounts for 40 percent of all interstate traffic in the Commonwealth.
