PAMPLIN, Va. (WTVR)- State Police are investigating a crash that killed three pedestrians  Saturday night.

VSP spokeswoman Corrine Geller tells CBS 6 the accident occurred at 10:31 p.m. on Route 460 Business, approximately a mile from Route 460 in Pamplin, part of Prince Edward County.

Geller says the three men were standing in the middle of 460 when an eastbound 1999 Nissan Altima struck them. Investigators have determined that the Nissan was traveling at an excessive rate of speed. All three men died at the scene.

The three men have been identified as Kevin A. Burrell, 20, of Richmond; and Arthur C. Wheeler, 40, of Pamplin, and his nephew, Eric J. Wheeler, 22, of Lynchburg.  State police are still unsure as to why the three men were in the middle of the roadway.

Geller says the driver of the Nissan, a 20-year-old Pamplin woman, was transported to Southside Hospital in Farmville for observation. A female juvenile who was riding in the front seat was taken to UVA Hospital for treatment of serious, but non-life threatening injuries. A backseat passenger, a male juvenile, was not injured.

Police say alcohol was not a factor in the crash, and charges are pending the completion of the investigation and consultation with the Prince Edward County Commonwealth’s Attorney.
