Two rabies cases in Henrico, one human attacked

HENRICO, Va. (WTVR)—Officials have confirmed two cases of rabies from two separate Sunday incidents, one involving an attack on a human.

In one incident a raccoon attacked a dog in the 2400 block of Hartman Street, not far from the Math Science Innovation Center. The dog killed the raccoon and the raccoon was submitted to the State Lab for testing.   A positive result for rabies came back.

The dog involved did have a current rabies vaccination and has been quarantined for 45 days. [BONUS: Click here for more info on rabies from the Virginia Department of Health’s Rabies Control and Prevention website]

Also on Sunday, June 10, 2012, a cat bit a human in the 400 block of Lee Ave, near the Woodstock Hill Country Club.

The cat tested positive for rabies.

Henrico Police Animal Protection reminds everyone to be sure to keep their pets’ rabies vaccinations current to ensure the safety of their pets and the community.

Additionally, abnormal wildlife behavior can be reported to the Henrico Police Non-Emergency Communications Center at (804) 501-5000.
