RICHMOND, Va. (WTVR)–Today the City of Richmond installed a warning sign near the intersection where high school student Antonio Shands Jr. died almost two weeks ago.

The sign warns that there is a stop sign ahead.

Neighbors complained to CBS 6 reporter Shelby Brown that the obscured stop sign, which CBS 6 captured on video, was a safety hazard for those unfamiliar with the intersection.

They said, and video showed, that an overgrown tree limited visibility of the oncoming stop at the intersection of Cherokee Road and Old Westham Road.

Huguenot High School student Shands, 18, was a passenger in a sedan that police said did not stop at the intersection and was then hit by a pickup truck.

Councilwoman Kathy Graziano, Fourth District, told CBS 6 that it is the city’s responsibility to trim the tree that obscures the sign, but as far as she knew, no one had complained to the city about it.

The graduation for Huguenot High School is tonight at the Richmond Coliseum. Shands’ mother will be collecting his diploma. We will have coverage of this solemn event, this evening.
