RICHMOND, Va (WTVR) -- The Capitol leg for the Virginia Law Enforcement torch made its way through the River City at 10:00 a.m today, in honor of the Special Olympics Summer Games.

More than 75 Richmond area officers took part in the final leg of the torch run. The Flame of Hope has traveled more than 1,900 miles and more than 2,000 officers and Special Olympics athletes have participated.

Following the final leg of the torch run, the Flame of Hope will be carried into the Summer Games Opening Ceremony. The event kicks off at 8:00 p.m. at the University of Richmond's Robins Center.

Organizers of the Central Virginia Special Olympics are encouraging everyone to come out to experience the two days of the Summer Games, and to cheer on some special athletes.

Special Olympics has reached a milestone this year, as they prepare to celebrate the 30th year for the torch run. And this year Virginia law enforcement agencies raised a record-breaking $924,000.

Following the opening ceremony, the Summer Games will kick off at 9:00 a.m. Saturday, June 9.
