Virginia Beach — A 13-year-old Virginia Beach boy has been given a one day in-school suspension for what he did to the American flag.

Administrators at Plaza Middle School say Moses Hinton used the flag to wipe his hands after walking out of a school bathroom last month.

It’s a claim Moses’ mother denies.

“His response was ‘Mommy I was coming up the stairs and I lost my balance and I touched the flag.’ I definitely don’t feel like it deserved a suspension,” says Victoria Hinton.

Originally, the Virginia Beach School District said what Moses did was considered defacing the flag, but admits it made an error classifying it that way. The district says it stands by it’s decision to suspend him.
